How To Become A Producer

Workshops are for individuals and groups who will be producing programs to air on Hartford Public Access Television. Training is available for City of Hartford residents and organizations based in the City of Hartford.

The first step is to call and sign up for an orientation. Call 860-524-8621 and speak with a staff member. We will assist you in signing up for the orientation, based on availability.

One major responsibility of a studio producer is to assemble a crew. Crew members must take the workshop and be willing to volunteer on a regular basis for the production of the program. It is in the producer's best interest to have a crew when taking a workshop as it will facilitate the training and production.

Suggested Minimal Crew Positions:

  • 1 Director
  • 2 Camera Operators
  • 1 Audio Mixer

Orientation

Orientations are first come, first serve. They are on the First & Third Wednesdays of the month.

  • First Wednesday Orientation is held at 7:00 p.m.
  • Third Wednesday Orientation takes place at Noon.

If you are unable to make either of these times, please let us know and we may be able to accommodate your schedule if we have advance notice.

Orientation is MANDATORY for producers only, but crew members will be welcomed. Attendance and participation of a crew at workshops is MANDATORY.

Training Workshops:

Hartford Public Access Television (HPATV) has a 20+ year history providing training to our community.

We offer two forms of production training: STUDIO and FIELD.

You will receive skilled training in the use of cameras, lighting, audio, studio set up, editing, and graphics.

  • STUDIO - Productions which will use the Hartford Public Access Studios for either LIVE broadcast productions or to RECORD productions for broadcast later.

  • FIELD - Productions which will utilize our field equipment for ON-LOCATION productions outside of our station.

NOTE: Another option is to use your own equipment and utilize HPATV for on air programming distribution.

Training Sessions must be scheduled in advance. They are offered on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Following completion of the Saturday session, trainees practice their skills by coming into the station during the week and working under the direction of the HPATV staff person until they have produced three shows.

Fees (per workshop)

Individual Producer - $50.00 tax-deductible donation payable to HPATV
Crew members - $20.00 tax -deductible donation payable to HPATV

Donations are accepted at the end of the Orientation to complete enrollment in Workshops. Once workshop is completed, you will be granted access to use the facility or equipment to produce your vision for broadcast to the Hartford Community.
